Modern Drywall, Inc. - Celebrating 60 Years


For the past 62 years, Modern Drywall, Inc. has successfully grown to become one of the largest interiors companies in the Inland Northwest. The depth of experience within the company is a testament to its longevity as well as the pride and work ethic held by its operators and employees alike. Modern Drywall is a family-owned business founded in 1952. For the last 40 years the company has been involved in commercial-only projects including schools, hospitals, government, retail, and industrial. Here is a timeline of the 62-year history of Modern Drywall:

1952 - Company founded by Lowell Mickelson and Gordon Hendrickson with two other partners. Company’s first jobs were post World War II tract homes in north Spokane. For the next 20 years the company’s focus was drywall in any wood frame structure

1972 - Modern Drywall forms joint venture with Coleman Wall and Ceiling (a lath and plaster company that also did metal stud framing). Together they are awarded the metal stud framing and drywall for the 14 story Washington Mutual building in downtown Spokane, their first major commercial project

1973 - Ron Mickelson joins firm after receiving degree from Washington State University in Construction Management and directs company toward commercial only projects.

1980 - Modern Drywall buys out Coleman Wall and Ceiling and adds lath and plaster, metal framing, and EIFS to its scope of work.

1983 - Modern Drywall joins the Northwest Wall and Ceiling Bureau trade association.

1984 - Modern Drywall joins the Inland Northwest Associated General Contractors association.

1987 - Second generation sons Ron Mickelson, Jim Mickelson and Dave Hendrickson purchase Modern Drywall from fathers.

1988 - Suspended Acoustical Ceilings are added to scope of services.

1990 - The Heart Institute building in Spokane becomes milestone project for company. In addition to drywall, framing and plastering the company now adds panelized EIFS, thermal and sound insulation and spray fireproofing to its scope of work.

1994 - First Costco project in Phoenix, Arizona. Over the next 17 years the company will go on to do more than 70 stores in 17 states.

1999 - Riverpark Square and AMC 20 Theatres in downtown Spokane become another milestone project. Framing, drywall, acoustical ceilings, embossed metal pan ceilings, spray fireproofing, EIFS panels and insulation account for the $5.2 million contract. Eighty five tradesmen were on-site at the same time to meet the tight schedule.

2005 - Brad Mickelson joins Modern Drywall as Estimator/Project Manager. He becomes the third generation in the company.

2006 - Modern Drywall suspends plastering and spray fireproofing services due to lack of market.

2012 - Modern Drywall celebrates its 60th Anniversary.
